My Place of Birth - Macao

The Macau Special Administrative Region, commonly known as Macau or Macao is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China, the other being Hong Kong. Macau lies on the western side of the Pearh River Delta, bordering Guangdong province in the north and facing the South China Sea in the east and south. Moreover, Macau was both the oldest and the last European colony in China. Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 16th century and subsequently administered the region until the handover on December 1999. The Sino-Portugues Joint Declaration and the Basic Law of Macau stipulate that Macau operates with a high degree of autonomy until at least 2049, fifty years after the transfer.

Macau is famous for gambling and it is also a small global village where a plurality of cultures mix. Whether or not you enjoy gambling, the splendid buildings of the Historic Center of Macau will be sure to impress you.

The Historic Center of Macau preserves the earliest, largest, most concentrated and complete mixture of Portuguese and Chinese architectures in Asia. With its historic street, residential, religious and public buildings, the historic centre of Macau provides a unique testimony to the meeting of aesthetic, cultural, architectural and technological influences from East and West. The site also contains a fortress and a lighthouse, which is the oldest in China. The site bears testimony to one of the earliest and longest-lasting encounters between China and the West based on the vibrancy of international trade.
